I have been building models since I was a kid. My first model was a four-engine blue drag racer. I had all the Aurora monster models. These and others all lived on a wall mounted peg board. Time, earthquakes and moves have destroyed all of these. When I got older and had my own house, I had a cabinet to put models in. Life slows hobbies down so I did not build a lot for many years, maybe one or two models. As I am now retired, I am building a lot more and have a collection of around 125 completed items. This includes armor (mostly), aircraft, figures and sci-fi.
I have been a technician all my life. This background has been a part of my modeling. I like to scratch-build and my knowledge of machining helps this a lot. I have also done 3D design, well before it became the norm and you had to have companies with the high dollar machines do you printing. I still do this and have my own machine for my designs. Seems like all the pieces I build now have at least one of my designed parts in the completed piece. I have also been fortunate enough to have a very talented figure sculpture and painter give me lessons on painting. The clubs I have been in have also, thru the members, helped me a great deal.
Over the years my focus has evolved to complete a piece to represent how it would appear historically. This allows me to display the item using appropriate scenic and historic elements. This also gives me the chance to learn a great deal about weapons and conflicts that I never knew about before. It certainly is a great time for this hobby!
